Swiss Army knife for China
In China, daily life runs almost entirely through your phone: paying, calling a taxi, navigating, booking tickets. Prepare this at home and you'll have hardly any problems on the ground. Start only at the airport and you'll often stand helplessly in front of a screen full of Chinese characters.
Here you'll find a guide for every important app that you can work through step by step at home — without any Chinese and without help from hotel staff. Each guide ends with a test you should do before departure.
Before departure
Most problems in China don't arise on the ground but because something wasn't set up beforehand.
Entry
Citizens of many European countries, including Germany, currently enter visa-free for up to 30 days. The rules change — check the current situation before booking. Days are counted from the day after arrival.
Since December 2025 a digital arrival card has been compulsory, even for visa-free entry. Fill it in online before departure. Your passport must be valid for at least six months, and you should be able to show an onward ticket. Hotels register guests with the police automatically.
Paying
Ordinary debit cards often don't work. Link Alipay or WeChat Pay to a Visa or Mastercard before departure and test it. Didi, train tickets, buses and almost every bill depend on it. Cash is accepted only reluctantly in many places.
Internet
Google, YouTube, WhatsApp and Instagram are blocked without a VPN. Install and test a VPN while you're still outside China — after that the providers' websites are blocked too. Roaming with a foreign SIM often gets round the blocks anyway.
Maps
Google Maps is useless in China. Better use Amap (高德地图) or the map in Alipay. Paste in the Chinese place name and it shows bus, train and walking routes with changes and the last departure.
Reservations
Some of the best free sights need advance registration: Cloudscape Library, science museum and the Museum of the South China Sea. The Hainan Museum in Haikou doesn't — individual visitors walk straight in with their passport.

Alipay
Paying in ChinaThe most important means of payment. Linked to your credit card, you pay by QR code almost everywhere — in shops, taxis, at market stalls.
Open the guide →💬WeChat / WeChat Pay
Messaging and payingChina's everything app: messages, calls and — with a linked credit card — paying by QR code. The second payment option alongside Alipay.
Open the guide →🚕DiDi
Taxis and ridesChina's Uber: enter the destination, see the price in advance, the driver comes, payment runs automatically. Easiest directly in Alipay — no separate app.
Open the guide →🗺️Amap (Gaode)
Navigation and place searchThe map app that really works in China: buses, trains, walking routes and millions of places. With an English interface and Chinese search terms.
Open the guide →🎫Trip.com
Hotels, trains, excursions, ticketsHotels, train tickets with your passport and admission tickets — in English or German, with an international credit card. With examples: train Sanya–Haikou, Forest Park and hotel booking.
Open the guide →🈯Translator
German/English ↔ ChineseMenus, signs, short conversations: with camera translation and offline packs. Plus ready-made phrases to copy.
Open the guide →🛡️NordVPN / VPN
Preparing to use a VPNMany familiar services can't be reached directly in China. If you want to use a VPN, you must install and test it before departure.
Open the guide →📶eSIM / roaming
Internet and data connectionWithout internet almost nothing works in China: no paying, no taxi, no map. Three ways to a data connection — and the roaming cost trap.
Open the guide →Never prepare just one way: Alipay + WeChat Pay + a second card + some cash. Then you stay able to act even if something doesn't work.
First steps in China
- Turn on the internet (eSIM or roaming)
- Open Alipay and WeChat — do both work?
- Open Amap and check your location
- Have the hotel address in Chinese ready
- Taxi or DiDi to the hotel
Getting around Hainan
Hainan can be travelled entirely without a rental car.
The rail loop
A high-speed line runs all the way round the island. Tickets in the 12306 app with your passport number or via Trip.com, on sale from 15 days ahead. With luggage allow 30 to 40 minutes — there's a security check.
| Sanya → Haitang Bay | 15–20 min |
| Sanya → Lingshui | 20–30 min |
| Sanya → Qionghai | approx. 1 h |
| Qionghai → Haikou | 35–45 min |
| Haikou → Yazhou, Western Line | 2–2.5 h |
City buses and trams
1 to 5 yuan, running roughly 6:00 to 23:00. Pay in Alipay (Travel → Public transport → transit QR code) or with the WeChat mini-programme “Hainan eTravel”. Cash only with the exact fare. Sanya rebuilt its bus network in 2024, and many route numbers online are outdated since then — more on the page Taking the bus in Sanya.
Didi
Runs as a mini-programme inside Alipay, without separate registration, with a foreign credit card. The price is fixed in advance, no haggling. Paste the destination in Chinese and you don't have to say a word.
E-scooters
They're everywhere, but the apps usually require registration with a Chinese ID, and many don't accept foreign passports. On Hainan, e-bikes require a helmet and a number plate. Without a Chinese driving licence anything bigger is out — including a self-drive rental car.
Where the way back is the problem
| Wuzhizhou Island | crossings until 16:00, last ferry back 19:30, night boat 21:00 |
| West Island | last ferry 18:00 |
| Wuzhishan | last bus back approx. 18:30 |
| Lava-stone villages | rural, hardly any buses in the evening |
| Night markets | run later than the buses |
Hotel card for the taxi
Save a card for each hotel on your phone, as a photo or note: the hotel's Chinese name, street, district and city — Chinese on the left, English on the right.
For our eleven hotels, the Chinese name and Chinese address are ready to copy on this website's hotel pages. For other hotels, take the name from your own booking confirmation.
Also save the booking number offline — a screenshot is enough.
